WAN vs LAN | Difference between LAN and WAN?
Hello friends, in this article, I am going to show the basic differences between LAN and WAN networks in computer networking.
What is LAN?
- A Local Area Network is a privately owned computer network covering a small geographical area like a home, office, building, or a school network etc.
- The LAN is used to connect the computers and other network devices so that the devices can communicate with each other to share the data and resources.
- They are widely used in the business organization, factories, colleges, university, industry to sharing resources such as files or hardware devices etc.
- Bus and Ring Topology are generally used. In LAN, network range is 10 m to 100 m.
What is WAN?
- A Wide Area Network is a type of telecommunication network,
- A WAN network is used for communication between different devices of a large geographical area such as large cities, countries or continent etc.
- A WAN network can contain multiple smaller networks, such as LANs or MANs.
- The Internet is the best example of the WAN network,
- The speed of WAN networks varies depends on the cost of the companies.

Difference between LAN and MAN?
|1||The LAN network is owned by a person, college, factory etc. It is a privately owned network.||WAN network can be private or it can be public leased type network.|
|2||LAN is designed to operate over a small physical area such as office, factory or group of buildings.||WAN is used for the network that spans over a large distance such as system spanning states countries etc.|
|3||LANs are easy to design and easy to maintain.||WAN is not so easy to design and maintain .|
|4||The communication medium used for interconnection is a simple co-axial cable in LAN network.||The communication medium used in WAN can be PSTN or satellite links due to longer distances involved.|
|5||Due to shorter distances, problems such as propagation delay do not exist. So, LAN can be used for time critical.||Due to long distances involved, the problems such as propagation delay, variable signal travel time applications, do exist. So, WAN can’t be used for the time critical applications.|
|6||LAN network can operate on very high data rates.||WAN network operates on low data rates.|
|7||In a LAN each station can transmit and receive over the communication medium.||In WAN, each station can not transmit.|
|8||Local area network operates on the principle of broadcasting.||WAN operates on the principle of switching.|
