Hello Friends, In this article, I’m going to show to you about Network Topology, uses and types of network topology.

What is Network Topology?

The term Topology refers to the way network devices connected to each other either physically or logically. Two or more devices connect to a link, this form a topology.

The topology of a network is the geometric representation of the relationship of all the linked devices.

Types of Network Topology:

There are five basic topologies available: Mesh, Star, Tree, Bus, Ring, and Hybrid topology.

Tyes of Network Topologs

1. Mesh Topology:

In a mesh topology, every device has a dedicated point-to-point link or connection to every other device. That means, all devices in a mesh topology are connected to each other to form a network.

How to find number of physical links in a mesh topology?

Suppose, we have n number of nodes connected to each other to form a mesh topology. A node must be connected to n-1 nodes, node 2 must be connected to n-1 nodes. Similarly, n nodes must be connected to n(n-1) nodes.

Thus, we need n(n-1)/2 total links to connect n number of nodes or devices.

2. Star Topology:

In a start topology, all devices are connected to a central devices such as Hub. The devices are not directly connected to each other unlike a mesh topology.

Here, the hub works like controller. if one device wants to send data to another, it sends the data to the central controller and the controller transfers to the target device.

3. Tree Topology:

A tree topology is similar to a star topology where the devices are liked to a central hub that controls the traffic to the network.

But in tree topology, all devices are not liked to a single hub. The central hub is also connected to other hubs.

4. Bus Topology:

In a bus topology, a single cable is used to connect all devices in the network. Here, the nodes are connected to the bus cable by drop line and taps.

  • Drop Line: A drop line is a connection running between the device and the main cable.
  • Tap: A tap is a connector that connects a drop line and main cable.

Bus topology is easy to install unlike other topologies.

5. Ring Topology:

In a ring topology, each device has a dedicated point-to-point link only with two neighbor devices. Thus all devices connected A node and form a cycle.

A ring topology is relatively easy to install like bus topology because each device is linked only to its immediate neighbors.

6. Hybrid Topology:

A hybrid topology is a combination of several topologies such as Ring, Star, Hub, and Bus.

For example, one department of a business may have decided to use a bus topology while another department has a ring topology.
